The abundance of OER (open educational resources) materials, it is quite staggering. Collections like OER Commons, MIT’s OpenCourseWare, World Digital Library, Rice University’s OpenStax textbook program, Washington State’s Open Course Library, and Cal State University’s Free Online Course Materials provide robust examples of highly useful content that educators and learners can conveniently access via the internet to create or consume robust academic materials.
However, with about one-third of the world’s population unconnected from the internet, a huge access barrier widens the gap between learners and intellectually nourishing OER content. This is why we created the Offline Campus.Org website. The purpose is to turn OER into resilient educational opportunities (REO) making the digital resources more available to learners with little or no internet connection. The Offline Campus team will make our learning platform freely available to individuals to download and engage with media-rich content from OER sources. Our REO initiative is our way of giving back to the community by investing our time and resources to help narrow the digital divide and broaden access.
Open educational resources are wonderful and life-changing for learners. And the assumption is educators and students have access to the internet to take advantage of these resources. Yet, learners with the most need often do not have an opportunity to use them due to unreliable or unavailable internet service.
This situation symbolizes the gap between available resources and students in need, expanding the digital divide. The Offline Campus personal learning platform helps bridge the gap and narrow the digital divide.
After installing the Offline Campus to a local Windows laptop or desktop PC, they will be greeted by this login screen. Using assigned credentials, they will see the course catalog.
The course catalog displays pictures related to each course, course title, and a brief description of each course. After learners click on a course they will be able to download it for later use.
To download the course, learners click the green button marked "Download" and they will see the course download all materials to their local Windows laptop.
